西周 [衣裳]之始

染织工业的出现，标志著人类历史进入了文明阶段。在母系氏族繁荣时期，我们的祖先已掌握了用麻和葛纤维来纺织的方法。在目前考古发现的实物中，殷商时期已有了丝织物，如带有雷纹的绢等。商代社会由麻织物进而发展至养蚕取丝造衣，使服饰的原料进一步丰富起来。手工业和纺织工业的不断进步使服饰愈加多样、精美。

始于商代的上衣下裳是中国最早的衣裳制度的基本形式，之後的帽、冠、发式、鞋子也随之产生。在古代社会，当天地间各种自然现象得不到解释时，人们就认为是某种力量主宰著一切，於是产生了对天地祖先的崇拜，从而形成了宗教信仰。上衣象徵天，天未明时是玄（黑）色；下裳象徵地，地是黄色。上玄下黄的服制就来源於对天地的崇拜。古人对祭祀天地、祖先的祭服比日常服饰更加重视和考究，并加以美化。至今我们仍把各种衣服统称为「衣裳」。
